New Forest Dog On The Forest Off The Lead

A helping paw around the house?

Do you fancy an extra pair of hands to help around the home? How about a pair of paws? There are some easy tasks our dogs might be able to help with and we’ll be talking and demonstrating these at the NFDOG Annual General Meeting next month.

Helping hand

The speaker is Kate Anderson. PACT, ABTC, KCAI CD1, who’s well qualified to discuss the subject of dogs helping at home, and put on a demonstration. Kate is a local dog trainer at The Friendly Dog Club in Barton on Sea, and also volunteers for Dog AID (Assistance in Disability) training pet dogs as fully qualified assistance dogs. She’ll be showing some tricks that you can teach your hound, to help you out at home. Kate is also an NFDOG committee member.

Any breed can lend a paw to help and have fun doing it! The most common purpose is to help people with a disability as assistance dogs – but the help dogs can give is much wider and useful in many households. It also supports the dog by providing engaging and enriching activity, and allowing a sense of reward that he/she has contributed to the running of the home (or in its eyes, it’s ‘pack’).

The AGM is in Brockenhurst Village Hall, SO42 7RY, at 18.30 on Wednesday, October 30 There will be a short bit of formal business (such as accepting reports of all NFDOG has done this year), followed by after a chance to recharge glasses and socialise, and the talk and demonstration. We keep it light – so wine and other drinks, and nibbles are provided, and lots of chance to meet and chat to like-minded dog folk.

Members are free, and it’s just £5.00 on the door for non-members, who will get a year’s membership of NFDOG as well as entrance to the AGM.

So if you’re looking for help around the home – do come along and prepared to be surprised at what dogs can do, and how easy it might be to train them!
