MADGE IS MADE UP AND CHESTER IS CHUFFED |
|
Alton member Pat Cushing was touched by the tale of Madge Pocock, whose sheltie died aged just eight, as reported in NFDOG’s September 2007 Newsletter). Madge, from New Milton, had feared that she would have to resign from NFDOG because she no longer owned a dog. Our article reported her relief when told she was welcome to stay in the group. By coincidence, Pat had put out feelers for a new sheltie for herself. After buying a puppy, she was told about a sheltie that needed a new home because his owners were emigrating to Australia. Pat arranged for Madge to meet the departing family and their dog, Chester. Said Madge: “He is such a friendly, easy-going dog, it was love at first sight. “He came to me in December. On the first day, he kept going to the door every time he heard a car, but he soon settled in after that. I kept him on a lead for the first week but now he stays with me when off the lead and responds to my commands. “2007 was a bad year for me. The house felt empty but Chester has helped to fill the gap.” Said Pat; “I always enjoy reading the Newsletter and so spotted the story about Madge. I am so delighted with the way it has worked out.” Chester will not be short of exercise now that he has become Madge’s companion. Madge, a sprightly 79-year-old, is a member of the New Forest Runners and recently covered 6.6 miles in the Wilverley Challenge event. “I take Chester for three mile walks and I will see how he goes before doing more,” she said. |
